2011 Oscar Gown Picks, Los Angeles

2011 February 28

Taking a break from our usual street style musings, the VainLane ladies pick our Oscar faves.  Coming soon: Oscar fails.

Crindy says: (top image) Ignore the icy death face of Mandy Moore in this photo – yes, that really is her – and direct your attention to the lovely delicate sequins fading into the nude tulle gown.  Looks great with her skin tone, and I like how the details extend down the arm a little bit as well.  I’m a little sick of strapless gowns so it’s nice to see something going on in the somewhat-neglected shoulder/arm area.  I will say though, that this Monique Lhullier frock may have better fit a lady with a few more curves – the mermaid shape would have really come out.

Cairn says: (middle image)This Chanel gown, worn by Michelle Williams,  must have been hand beaded which means a lot of subtle details and love went into it.  Because the silhouette is very simple and classic the beading does not overwhelm the eye. There are no breaks in the dress so it’s one seamless, lovely, endless …. It seems like her pixie hair was cut just for the dress. Perfect.

Cristina says: (bottom image)Cate always straddles the line between avante-garde and just plain crazy, e.g. Helena Bonham’s mix-matched shoes at the Golden Globes, with a touch of old school Hollywood glamour. This lilac Givenchy Couture masterpiece is demure in the front with lilac and canary pebble beads. I love the way the yellow pops with her blonde hair and continues down the open cross back for a bit of va va voom.

Changle Lu, Shanghai

2011 February 27

Dead of winter in Shanghai but little shorts still make their appearance.  Season-less wearing and shopping. Shows they don’t let seasons dictate what they feel like wearing. This is how I shop too. I wont miss out on a cute dress just cause it’s snowing outside. And no, I don’t have more important things to think about.

Introducing our New VainLane Contributor, Cristina!!

2011 February 25

This young lady is wearing Faux Fur from Zara

Cairn: Vintage fur doesn’t count.

Cristina: I totally agree with vintage fur being acceptable. Also, why can’t they just farm mink and treat them lovely and then skin them when they die naturally?

Cairn: ><

“A General Universal Recognition of the Ugliness”, Shanghai

2011 February 22

Sick of Uggs and, more so, of Fuggs. I think of coprophagous animals when i think of them. All of it makes me want to do some projectile vomiting, just like the time I did into a trash can that was conveniently located one step down from my seat in econometrics class, inconveniently located about 2.5 feet from the head of a poor sleep deprived fella innocently trying to catch up on some zzz’s.  Subsequently, I never had another class before 11 a.m. for the remainder of my college days.  But I digress.

Some common coprophagous animals include cats, flies, beetles, chinchillas, behavioral problematic prone beagles, and less commonly in humans, all of which I don’t really like that much.  This is why I freak out when touched by a fly, NOT because I’m a pansy.

Btw, thinking and writing about coprophagous animals while eating soup dumplings = best diet ever.

With that said, this girl is simply adorable. Her quirky poka dot lined coat with sleeves slightly too short (my new obsession) combined with a print scarf and checkered boyfriend shirt are very true to her personal style.  I just wish she didn’t coprophagic with those shoes.

This is what happens when I drink too much milk tea.

Additionals:

Define Coprophagous, and add to favorites.

Fuggs.

Another really great scarf

I would have died (of happiness) if she wore these instead. I don’t care that they are indoor shoes.

The Ugly Truth, etc.

Some Good Looking Ankles, Shanghai

2011 February 21

It’s so unusual to see bare ankles in the Shanghai winter that this is like a sweet relief.  Coming from California, where winter is kind of a joke and sandals are worn year-round, it amuses me that when I do go without socks here, people stare in shock, old ladies make comments and of course, my ayi asks if I’m not cold.  Well, yes, it is cold without socks, but it’s also cute; sometimes, we make sacrifices.

Generally I’m loving this outfit.  It’s a touch busy on top – I think she could do without the white shirt, but I understand (after all, it is winter).  The pleated skirt is a favorite of mine – simple but sophisticated – and the Céline bag is adorable (it also matches the tan stripe in the shoes without being too “matchy”).

Can’t wait for spring and more bare ankles!

(I’m like a horny 18th-Century marquis or something – trying to get the ladies to show me their ankles.  Yikes.)

Céline has the best bags.

So does Chloé.  Currently infatuated with their 2011 bags.  Need!
