2011 Oscar Gown Fails, Los Angeles

Taking a break from our usual street style musings, the VainLane ladies pick our Oscar faves and fails.

Crindy says: (top image) Nicole Kidman is a statuesque porcelain doll who never fails to look, well, statuesque at A-list Hollywood events.  Unfortunately, that’s not going to cut it, especially with this awkward mess of a dress she wore to this year’s Oscar ceremony.  The strange flare at the hips, the clumsy slit in the middle and the over-the-top embroidery detailing of her Christian Dior dress call to mind an unfortunate bride who tries to pack too much good stuff into one gown – failing miserably.  And while the tangerine peep-toe pumps might work at the office, they’re really not really red-carpet ready.

Cristina says: (middle image) When I look at Jennifer Hudson’s Atelier Versace dress, I think, “Oh honey!”  The real tragedy is how close this look is to being a triumph: the way that tangerine dream of a color looks on her skin, the spiral pleats in the bodice showing off her new size two waist, the exaggerated skirt, the hair, makeup and jewels. All good. Unfortunately the halter-top does nothing for her ladies and really what’s the point of looking that close to good when your boobs look funny?  The moral: never neglect the décolletage.
