Dressing for Your Body – the MAN Edition

Slim and stylish - Skinny ripped jeans, Beatles boots, blazer, vest, shirt, tie, pea coat, spotted scarf

photos from NUlookbook

We ladies are usually saturated with images of stars, starlets, models, singers, actors and people who are famous just for being good-looking.

Yes. We get it.  Angelina Jolie is hot.

But what about the guys?  I think we tend to overlook the severe pressures faced by skinny men to have the bulk and physique of Jude Law, Jake Gyllenhaal, that new James Bond, Shaft, Ryan Kwanten, …I mean I could go on but me writing a list of hot muscley guys is not the point.  The point is, dudes face body image issues too, and sometimes, when we see a little fella who is proud to show off his lean frame and dresses with panache to boot, we should acknowledge and reward him.  With a blog post.  You’re welcome.

So here’s to you, sir, you with the stick legs (which, of course, I’m jealous of, because of magazines).  Today we celebrate your strategically ripped skinny jeans, your updated Beatles boots, your tailored blazer-vest-shirt ensemble, your ability to segue expertly from office to street and that you kind of remind me of Morissey.  So what if you got beat up by a jock or two in high school? Let’s remind ourselves that today, those former athletes are wearing khaki cargo shorts, XXXL Big Dogs shirts, shiny white ankle socks and off-brand sneakers from Costco.

Look like the man.

Winter Gets Really Old, Really Fast, Shanghai

2011 January 31

Coming from California I didn’t really have what you might traditionally call “winter”, so I used to get really excited when it would rain and get frosty enough to actually break out the sweaters, jackets, boots, scarves, hats and the rest, bundle up and revel in the cold.

Flash forward: Three Shanghai winters later, I’ve noticed something disturbing.  It’s not that I don’t still get excited for the colder months.  That’s not it at all.  It’s just that it all get so damn boring so damn quickly.  Oh, at first we all make an effort to coordinate the jackets with the boots with the ear muffs.  Maybe we even go to the fabric market to get a new cashmere coat made.  But then, like an ayi’s cleaning skills a few weeks after you’ve hired her, it all falls to hell.  There’s no inspiration.  You just can’t be bothered.  And clearly, we’re in the middle of a drab-winter-clothes pandemic.

Look at this mess.  A sea of puffy, shapeless coats, offensively hideous (fake) Ugg boots, mittens that have been worn too many times to be cute, shapeless, boring hats that interfere with a decent head of hair, and, to top it all off, a serious lack of color.

I hate to break it to everyone, but there are like, at least two more months of this shiz.  So mix it up with a bright scarf!  Belt an otherwise blobby jacket!  Splash out on those fabulous purple leather gloves!

Or, at the very least, wear something divine underneath.  It’s a long, cold and sometimes, cruel winter.

To be honest, not a huge fan of the outfit. Wishing she had colored wellies on and a different colored bag. I don’t really get the all black outfit. I am sure this is her lazy sunday hangover outfit, to which many of us can relate. But she’s so cute cause she reminds me of my Caucasian friend Cori in high school, in face and hair. You wonder why I even have to mention Caucasian? Well, this post has now given me a reason to add this blog’s link below…

Real reason for this post.

The subject of this street snap appeared to be an extraordinarily stylish Shanghai resident, but a closer inspection revealed his true nature: Adidas Streetwear Designer.

Mr. Adidas is an original (unlike the store “Vogue” behind him) in his nerdy-cool specs, oversized ribbed circle scarf, fitted leather jacket, murse (man purse), and grey and black striped cardigan.

The perfect proportions, creative layering and the right mixture of textures allows this handsome fella to jump out in a sea of millions droning in puffy, fur-lined jackets, walking the streets of China.

The chic, basic, white dress with mini-cap sleeves is the must have this fall.  A mother that sews is a bonus in any season.  Paired with a dark opaque pair of nylon stockings and knee high leather riding boots, the resulting outfit is a perfect look at almost any age. Promise.  This young lady added some color to her outfit by wearing a red-strapped messenger bag to go with the sporty theme of her outfit, and she did what I often do, which is wrap a knit sweater around the bag strap for more style and easy access.
